The 1st Ajmal National Moot Court Competition 2026 was successfully held over two days, on 29 and 30 August 2026, at Hojai, Assam, organised by the Moot Court Society, Ajmal Law College. The national-level event drew a strong response from law schools across the country, with 55 teams registering for the competition, of which 40 teams were shortlisted to compete. In all, around 120 participants took part, comprising mooters, researchers, and speakers representing law colleges, universities, and National Law Universities from multiple states.
The competition opened on the first day with an inaugural session graced by Prof. (Dr.) K.V.S. Sarma, Vice Chancellor of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, who attended as the Chief Guest. Maulana Abdur Rehman Ajmal, Hon’ble Trustee of the Ajmal Foundation and former MLA of South Salmara, was present as the Guest of Honour. The inaugural function was also attended by Mr. Adwaita Bhattacharjee, President of the Hojai Bar Association; Dr. Khasrul Islam, Director of the Ajmal Foundation; Dr. MRH Azad, General Manager of the Foundation; Dr. Akkas Ali, Principal, Ajmal Law College; and Mr. Tarique Aziz Choudhury, who served as the Convenor of the competition. Following the inaugural session, the Preliminary Rounds of the competition were conducted through the remainder of the first day.
The second day of the competition saw the Quarter-Final, Semi-Final, and Final rounds being contested among the top teams, culminating in a Valedictory Ceremony held in the presence of a distinguished panel of judges and judicial officers. The ceremony was graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Kalyan Rai Surana, Judge of the Gauhati High Court; Mr. Justice Ajit Borthakur, Former Judge of the Gauhati High Court and a member of the Assam Human Rights Commission; and Justice Prasanta Kumar Deka (Retd.), Chairperson of the Lokayukta, Arunachal Pradesh. The District and Sessions Judge, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), and other judicial officers of Hojai were also present at the concluding session.
At the conclusion of the competition, Team ALC-07, representing J.B. Law College, Guwahati, comprising Jishnu Pratim Kashyap, Agastya Kashyap, and Pragyan Patowary, was declared the Winner and received a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000. Team ALC-05, representing University Law College, Gauhati University, comprising Dishamoni Deka, Adishree Hazarika, and Anju Devi, was declared the Runner-up and awarded a cash prize of Rs. 75,000. Both winning teams also received academic benefits in the form of scholarships at Manupatra Academy—a 100% scholarship for the Winner and a 75% scholarship for the Runner-up.
Agastya Kashyap of Team ALC-07, representing J.B. Law College, Guwahati, was adjudged the Best Mooter of the competition and awarded a cash prize of Rs. 30,000. The Best Researcher award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 20,000, was conferred upon Nishant Kumar of Team ALC-21, representing Chanakya National Law University, Patna. Team ALC-26, also representing Chanakya National Law University, Patna, comprising Shubhangi Singh, Saurabh Barnwal, and Kumar Tejas, was recognised with the Best Memorial award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 20,000. The Best Advocate of the Preliminary Round award was conferred upon Abhijnyan Choudhury of NEF Law College, who received a gift kit worth Rs. 5,000.
The competition saw participation from law colleges and universities spread across 15+ states and Union Territories of India. Several nationally recognised law schools took part in this edition, including Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, the National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA), Assam, Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur, and the National Law University (NLU), Tripura, along with Symbiosis Law School in Pune, KIIT School of Law in Bhubaneswar, the Banaras Hindu University, and KLE Law College in Bengaluru. Around 8 teams travelled from South India to take part in the competition, and a few other regional teams also participated, with the majority of participating teams coming from outside Assam.
The event was made possible with the support of its partners. Manupatra served as the Legal Tech Partner, Indian Legal Wing as the Academic Partner, and Lawbhoomi as the Outreach Partner, with the ILW Journal of Law and Research on board as the Publication Partner. The competition also received support from Havells, SreeMaruti, and Sky Roofing as partners.
The successful conduct of the competition was made possible through the dedicated efforts and coordination of the Organising Committee, comprising Mr. Tarique Aziz Choudhury, Convenor; Ms. Sabreen Sheikh, Co-Convenor; and the Faculty Coordinators—Mr. Rakibul Islam Laskar, Ms. Paree Saikia, and Mr. Bhargav Bikas Dutta—of the Moot Court Competition, along with the faculty members and students of Ajmal Law College. Their collective efforts in planning, coordinating, and executing the various stages of the competition contributed significantly to its smooth and successful conduct.
