53 Nahor Saplings Planted in Hojai to Commemorate Zubeen Garg
To commemorate the memory of the late legendary artist and Assam’s “Heartthrob” Zubeen Garg, the Ajmal Foundation organised a unique and emotionally moving programme on the occasion of the first “Zubeen Divas.” Even though a year has passed since the artist’s demise, the people’s genuine love for his voice, music and creations remains unchanged. This sentiment was reflected through the commemorative programme.
With the objective of keeping Zubeen Garg’s memory alive among the younger generation, the Ajmal Foundation organised various programmes over three days, from September 16 to 19. The series concluded with a special tribute programme on September 19. A major attraction of the event was the participation of 53 distinguished personalities from Hojai district, who planted 53 Nahor saplings, the tree associated with Zubeen Garg and dearly loved by the late artist. The saplings were handed over to 53 underprivileged students of Ajmal Model Residential School, who participated in the plantation programme. The initiative symbolised the harmonious connection between nature and humanity and became a heartfelt tribute to the artist. According to the organisers, each Nahor tree will serve as a living symbol of Zubeen Garg’s memory, reminding future generations of his music and contributions.
Among those present at the programme were noted artist and music director Joy Barua, Assam Down Town University Dean of Life Science Prof. Jogendra Chandra Kalita, and renowned social worker Anup Borthakur. They spoke about Zubeen Garg’s musical journey, creativity, sensitivity and humanitarian outlook, highlighting many lesser-known and inspiring aspects of his life. Speaking at the event, Dr. Khasrul Islam, Director of Ajmal Foundation, said that Zubeen Garg had taken Assamese music and culture to a unique height. His voice and creativity would continue to inspire generations to come. He said that it was the social responsibility of the present generation to pass Zubeen’s ideals and creative legacy on to future generations. As part of the three-day “Zubeen Davas” celebration, several creative programmes were organised, including essay writing, speech and music competitions, tree plantation and other activities based on the life and work of Zubeen Garg.
Additionally, under the aegis of the Ajmal Foundation and in collaboration with Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Science and Technology, a special commemorative publication titled ‘Mayabini’ was released as an initiative of the educational institutions run by the Foundation. Garima Garg shared a special message for the publication. The first Zubeen Divas witnessed a renewed expression of the deep respect, love and emotion of the people of Assam towards the legendary artist. Through cherished memories and heartfelt affection, people once again returned to the world of Zubeen Garg’s music. His songs, his vision and his creations continue to illuminate Assam’s cultural sky with the same brilliance even today
